Project Abstract

This project divides deep into the past of African American history as it relates to food culture. Looking back to pre-colonial Africa before moving through African history as it becomes African American history.

The timeline of this history begins with pre-colonial Africa with sources that discuss 1000 AD. It concludes with 21st century, allowing a expansive timeframe with highlights on African American Slavery in the Americas.

Focusing on how prior farming and cultivation inspired the modern day is what my foodways research explains. The research presented is a broad view, but I do think more personal narrative and stories would add to the significance of looking at food culture in the African American community.
